In March 2009, Burgeon Education held its first Education Expo in
Shanghai and Hangzhou. In Shanghai the event was held at the Mason
Hotel and was attended by 21 schools; in Hangzhou the venue was the
World Trade center, where 20 schools attended. The institutions in
attendance were a combination of secondary schools and universities
hailing from the U.K., America, Australia and Singapore, including
representatives from Goldsmiths, University of London, Heriot-Watt
University and UC Berkeley.
Prior to the event we had asked students to pre-register
online or over the phone to indicate their intention to attend, in
Shanghai over 120 registered and in Hangzhou over 80. On the actual
day of the expo, according to our records, a total of 177 students
attended the Shanghai Expo and 100 went to the Hangzhou event. Given
that it is likely students who neither pre-registered nor are
recorded in our database attended the event, the total number is
closer to 310. Accounting for the parents that accompanied most
students, the number of attendees was over 500.
Most students attending the event were interested in graduate level
study. While there were some Grade 12 students at the expo exploring
alternatives to the College Entrance Examination, in general high
school students were in the minority. A contributing factor to this
phenomenon is likely the difference in timing between high schools
in China and those in the US and UK. Whereas there are four years in
US and UK schools, in China there are only three, this often to
leads to complications in figuring out at which point a Chinese
student should enter high school or to students repeating a year of
school.
In addition to the schools, students and parents that attended our
Expo in Hangzhou, several educational media outlets were also
present, including reporters from the Zhejiang Education TV station
and Zhejiang Education Online. Needless to say our Expo made the
education headlines in Zhejiang that day!
